The Day of Romanian Martyrs in Huedin is marked for the first time on September 10, after its establishment by Law no. 156/2026. The commemoration brings back into focus the drama of the Romanians in northern Transylvania under the Horthyist occupation.

After the Vienna Dictatorship of August 30, 1940, Romania was forced to cede northern Transylvania to Hungary. Thus, our country lost more than 43 thousand square kilometers and 2,667,000 inhabitants, most of them Romanians.

Constantin Virgil Gheorghiu described the atmosphere of those days in his memoirs like this: "The full news fell in the middle of the night like lightning. Like thunder. It was like an earthquake. People took to the streets. They gathered. The crowd mourned, went in convoy, gathered at crossroads and in public squares."
