The Synodal Commission on Bioethics will deal with issues of artificial intelligencetranslated

The Synodal Commission on Bioethics of the Russian Orthodox Church has been appointed responsible for developing the church position regarding artificial intelligence (AI) and other high technologies.
The corresponding decision was made at a meeting of the Holy Synod on October 22, 2026 (journal No. 79).
“To define the Synodal Commission on Bioethics as a church structure responsible for developing a church position on artificial intelligence and other high technologies, with subsequent presentation of the results of the work to the Hierarchy,” the Synod resolution said.
This Commission is also tasked with interacting on topics related to AI and high technology with relevant government authorities, the scientific and business community, and public organizations.
In accordance with this, the Synodal Commission on Bioethics itself was renamed the Synodal Commission on Bioethics and High Technologies.
In its work, the Commission will be able to involve representatives of other church structures, “the scope of whose activities corresponds to the topics it considers.”
