The Russian Orthodox Church explained the consequences of the wedding of two brothers and two sisterstranslated

The Russian Orthodox Church does not allow the wedding of two brothers with two sisters due to existing canonical restrictions. Priest Philip Ilyashenko, who serves in the Church of St. Nicholas of Myra in Kuznetsy, spoke about this. According to him, such marriage unions are among those prohibited by church law due to the kinship ties that arise.

The priest explained that the rules for concluding a church marriage are enshrined in the document “On the canonical aspects of church marriage,” approved by the Council of Bishops. It establishes the permissible degrees of relationship between spouses and determines the circumstances that prevent a wedding. A situation in which two siblings intend to marry two sisters is subject to appropriate restrictions.
Ilyashenko emphasized that this is not about the personal beliefs of priests or established everyday customs. The ban has a church-legal basis and is applied in accordance with established norms. Therefore, the decision on the possibility of a wedding is made taking into account the canonical requirements for the family ties of future spouses.
