In Malda district in the Indian state of West Bengal, a 175-year-old Shiva temple collapsed into the Ganges River on September 6. It was located in the Ratua area and had been under threat of destruction for about a year due to coastal erosion. Amid the flooding, the situation in the district continues to deteriorate: dozens of villages are flooded, thousands of people have fled their homes, The Times of India reports.

The river completely swallowed the church

The church was located in Muniramtola, in the Ratua district. The danger of its destruction has existed since last year, but temporary protective work made it possible to preserve the building. After a sharp rise in water on September 5, a significant part of the coast was washed away. The next day, September 6, the church completely collapsed into the river.

Local school teacher Alok Mandal said that the Ganges used to be much further from this place: “When we were children, the river was almost 15 km from the church. It was extremely popular among believers, and the weekly market that took place around it attracted thousands of people, including from the neighboring state of Bihar.”
