The Polotsk experience in preserving families can become a nationwide practice. The initiative to introduce pre-divorce counseling, advocated by the Center for the Protection of Life and Traditional Family Values “Zarozhdeniye” of the Polotsk diocese, has been continued at the state level. The Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus instructed the Ministry of Justice to consider proposals for adjusting marriage and family legislation.
The impetus for a large-scale discussion was the VI Republican Forum of the Belarusian Orthodox Church “Family: Today, Tomorrow and Always,” held on May 15 at the National Library of Belarus. The key objective of the meeting was to find practical solutions to family problems. During the forum, Olesya Tochilo, director of the Zarozhdenie center, presented a project to help couples on the verge of separation.
The practice of Polotsk has proven its high efficiency. The pilot project, launched in 2020, showed impressive results: out of 62 couples who filed for divorce and agreed to undergo consultation with a family psychologist, 58 decided to save the marriage.
