Over 50 people gathered for the first liturgy in a hundred years in a Tatar villagetranslated

Prikhody.ru 09/13/2026. For the first time in 100 years, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the ancient Iliinsky Church in the village of Shonguty (Tatarstan). About 50 people gathered for the service. Almost everyone confessed and received the Holy Mysteries of Christ.

As previously reported in the public page “Orthodoxy in Tatarstan,” the church in the village was erected in 1797; the church was rebuilt in 1883. There were three thrones here: the main one - in the name of Elijah the Prophet, the side ones - in the name of the Great Martyr Panteleimon and St. Sergius of Radonezh. In the 30s of the 20th century, the church was closed and a granary was built in it. In 1960, the domes were demolished and the building was transferred to the Ministry of Culture.

In 2016, the church building, in deplorable condition, was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church. Restoration work began in 2022. Through the efforts of local residents, construction waste was removed and the roof was re-roofed. Later an iconostasis was installed. In the future, a team of volunteers plans to free the building from the ceilings erected during the Soviet era. The foundation also needs to be strengthened and the church painted.
