Orthodox calendar July 5 Saint Pious Athanasius the Athonite Saint Athanasius the Athonite was a native of Trebizond, on the southwestern shore of the Black Sea. His father was from Antioch in Syria, and his mother from Colchis (Greece).
Although the parents of the Reverend Athanasius wanted him to become a brave soldier, they did not even have a part in his upbringing because they died early.
He was raised by a nun who was a distant relative. One day a royal servant came to Trebizond, who, seeing Athanasius and his spiritual qualities, took him to Constantinople and entrusted him to a famous teacher to teach him philosophy. Even Atanasie became a teacher later.
Later he left Constantinople with Venerable Michael Malein, abbot of Chiminan monastery in Asia Minor. He ordained him into monasticism, giving him the name of Athanasius.
After four years he retired to Mount Athos. Emperor Nicephorus and his brother Leo the Patrician listened to the request of the Venerable Athanasius and built the Monastery of the Mother of God, cells and houses for monks in Athos.
