Today, September 9, the Church remembers St. Pimen the Greattranslated

September 8, 2026 · 1 min read

The memory of the ascetic of the first centuries of Christianity - St. Pimen the Great (+ 450) - is celebrated by the Orthodox on September 9.

The Venerable Pimen the Great was born in Egypt around 340. He was known not only for the holiness of his life, but also for the judicious teachings that his disciples wrote down.

His most important testament read: “A person must observe three main rules: fear God, pray often and do good to people.”

One day a monk came to St. Pimen from afar to learn wisdom, and immediately began to talk about complex and sublime subjects. However, the monk turned away from him and remained silent.

The monk was at first very surprised, and then, it seemed, he understood something, because he began to ask the saint about the struggle with spiritual passions. It was then that the saint turned to him with a brightened face: “Now you are talking about the essentials, and I will answer you,” and he taught for a long time about how to fight passions and defeat them.

The holy monk lived 110 years. For his great humility, wisdom and extreme selflessness in serving God, the Church of Christ called St. Pimen the Great.

This incident of the monk who came from afar and spoke of lofty matters made an impression on me. Pimen was silent until he asked about the passions of the soul – showing how practical he was. "I fear God, pray often and do good to people" I keep, it is simple and for our daily life here in Larissa.

That story about the monk who showed up talking about lofty stuff and Pimen just turning away really stuck with me. It makes sense—he waited until the guy got practical about fighting the passions before he lit up and started teaching. The three rules he left us are so straightforward I wrote them on a sticky note for my kitchen: fear God, pray often, do good to people. Simple but I catch myself forgetting the middle one on busy days at the shop.
