425 years have passed since the death of Voivode Mihai Viteazul, the first unifier of the Romanianstranslated

Sunday marks the 425th anniversary of the death of Michael the Brave, the first ruler who united Wallachia, Transylvania and Moldova under the same leadership.

At the end of the 16th century, Michael the Brave became lord of Wallachia, starting his reign in 1593. In the context of the confrontations between the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburg Empire, the voivode carried out an extensive military and diplomatic campaign to consolidate his power and defend Christendom.

In the year 1600, Michael the Brave managed, for a short time, to unite Wallachia, Transylvania and Moldova under the same leadership, becoming the first ruler to achieve the political union of the three Romanian countries. For his merits in the anti-Ottoman struggle, Pope Clement VIII named him "knight of Christ and defender of Christendom".

Final victory and death On August 3, 1601, Mihai the Brave fought alongside the troops of General Giorgio Basta in the Battle of Guruslău, where their army defeated the forces led by Sigismund Báthory. However, the victory would be the last in the voivode's life.

Six days later, on August 9, 1601, Michael the Brave was killed in his camp near Turda.…
