Saturday marks the 136th anniversary of the death of Vasile Alecsandri, one of the outstanding personalities of the Paşoptist generation, known for his literary work, diplomatic activity and involvement in the creation of the Union of Principalities in 1859.

Poet, dramatist, politician and diplomat, he had an important role both in the development of modern Romanian culture and in affirming the cause of the Romanians on the European level. He was a founding member of the Romanian Academy and laureate, in 1878, of the "Ginta Latina" prize, awarded in Montpellier.

Involved in the Revolution of 1848  Born in Bacău, on July 21, 1821, Vasile Alecsandri began his studies privately, continuing in Iasi and then in Paris. Returning to the country in 1839, he got involved in the cultural and administrative life of Moldova, holding, among other things, the position of director of the National Theater in Iasi.

In 1848 he was among the main participants in the revolutionary movement. After its repression by ruler Mihail Sturdza, Alecsandri took refuge in Transylvania and then in Chernivtsi, where he continued to support the project of reforming Romanian society.

Am citit că s-a născut la Bacău în 1821 și a condus Teatrul Național din Iași. Interesant cum un om care scria Pasteluri a ajuns și diplomat la Unire. Păcat că articolul se taie la „În perioada…”, voiam să văd ce a făcut după 1848.
