"The sign of the Holy Cross reminds the world of the sacrificial love of the Lord Jesus Christ", His Beatitude Father Patriarch Daniel emphasized on Monday at the historic "Saint Great Martyr Gheorghe" Chapel in the Patriarchal Residence.

His Beatitude explained that the veneration of the Holy Cross has its beginnings since the apostolic period and recalled the words of the Holy Apostle Paul about the Cross as the power of God for those who save themselves.

The Patriarch of Romania then presented the historical landmarks of the celebration of September 14, recalling the discovery of the wood of the Holy Cross by Saint Empress Elena, its elevation before the faithful by Bishop Macarie of Jerusalem and, later, the return of the Holy Cross to Jerusalem after its recovery from the Persians.

Sign of victory and glory Patriarch Daniel drew attention to the fact that the Holy Cross should not be regarded as an object that would be attributed a power independent of Christ: "The Cross cannot be transformed into a magical sign with occult power."
