Patriarch Daniel at the local proclamation of St. Eulogia: She was a confessor of Christ in troubled timestranslated

October 4, 2026 · 1 min read

His Beatitude Father Patriarch Daniel sent a message on Sunday at the local proclamation of Saint Pious Evloghia from Samurcășești. His Beatitude highlighted the saint's missionary activity during difficult times for society.

"Where Saint Pious Eulogia awakened the souls, the churches were filled to the brim, and the pubs remained empty. Working in good understanding with the priests, he taught the people to sing church songs and explained the words of the Holy Scripture in a way that everyone could understand", emphasized Father Patriarch Daniel.

The Patriarch of Romania recalled that one of her biggest concerns was to bring to the Sacrament of Marriage those who lived unmarried, without the Church's blessing.

"Her work was a mission of the Church, which brought people to the Holy Altar, that is, to the Holy Liturgy, to the Holy Mysteries and to the Christian life."

The message was presented by the Patriarchal Vicar Bishop Paisie Sinaitul, at the end of the Holy Liturgy at the Samurcășești Monastery.

It’s interesting how she and the priests together taught the people to sing and explained the Scriptures so that everyone could understand. In our choir we also often say that the main thing is that people not just repeat the words, but understand them. And about the fact that it led to living in a marriage with a wedding - this is generally important, how many couples now live just like that.

Yes, Elena, I also remember exactly this place about singing and explaining Scripture. In our Sunday school, I sometimes ask the children to first tell in their own words what this or that verse means, and then we sing. And with the wedding, you are right - now many people simply “live together”, and then they wonder why there is no peace in the family. I wonder if in your parish, do such couples often come for advice?

That bit about the pubs emptying out while the churches filled up really struck me. Makes you think how much one person’s quiet work can shift a whole village. Our choir director keeps saying the same thing – it’s not enough to sing the notes if no one knows what they mean.

Yes, that part about the pubs emptying while the churches filled really stayed with me too. My grandmother used to say the same thing happened in her village after one old nun started teaching hymns – people just stopped drifting to the tavern on Sundays. It makes you wonder what one steady soul can still do even now.

It reminded me a lot of what Patriarch Daniel said about the beer houses being emptied when the churches were full. Even in my village once, an old woman used to teach us church songs after dinner, and people really started coming to liturgy more than to the inn. I wonder how much we would need one today.

It is interesting how St. Eulogia together with the priests taught people to sing and explained the Scriptures so that everyone could understand. In our parish, it is also often repeated that it is not enough to just repeat words, it is necessary to hear with the heart. And it's good that they reminded us about weddings - how many couples are just living like that now, without a blessing.

I remember how my uncle used to say that when an old woman in the village started teaching the evening chants, there were actually fewer people staying at the cup. Patriarch Daniel's words also say this - the church was full, and the hotels were empty. It would be good if they were still working like this in our parish.

The part about her working with the priests to teach hymns so everyone actually understood the words really hit home. Our choir at St. Nicholas keeps saying the same thing — it’s not just repeating the notes. Makes me wonder how many of us could do a bit more of that quiet work in our own neighborhoods.

Yes, it reminded me of that part of Patriarch Daniel too. In my village near Gjirokastra, we had a similar grandmother who would gather us in the yard after dinner and teach us "Kyrie Eleison" in a low voice, never tiring. Today we really need someone to pull us from coffee shops to church, but I think it starts with every mother or grandmother in her own home. What do you think, can we do it a little more ourselves?

Yes, I noticed that part of Patriarch Daniel too. In Korça, when I was young, we had an old woman in the neighborhood who would gather us at her house on Sunday afternoons and explain the Gospel to us in simple words, without long sermons. Today, it seems to me that we are missing exactly this quiet work, from house to house, so that people are not left with only coffee.
