This year the Gospel of Mark 8:34-9:1 hit me just because I'm trying to go to the gym more without complaining so much. Taking up the cross really hurts, doesn't it? Thanks for the reminder.

Mark 8:34-9:1 is one of the hardest passages, I agree. Last year when I had surgery on my knee, every time I got up from the couch I thought exactly that "I deny myself". Carlos, you are doing well and going to the gym, but be careful not to overdo it and become grumpy on the other side.

The part about denying yourself really hits home. Last winter when my arthritis was acting up I kept thinking of that same line every time I had to get up early for the soup kitchen shift. Carlos, good on you for sticking with the gym, but Maria's right — don't overdo it or you'll be carrying a different kind of cross.

The arthritis part really rings a bell. I had the same thing hit my knees last February and that “deny yourself” verse kept popping into my head while I was icing them after my shift at the food pantry. Carlos, maybe switch to swimming a couple days instead of extra gym time?
