Patriarch of Moscow: AI is a matter of great importance for the future of humanity

Patriarch Kirill of Moscow chaired a meeting of the Russian Orthodox Church’s Supreme Church Council at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow on Thursday, September 17.

Artificial intelligence was among the main issues on the agenda, with the Council examining the topic “Artificial Intelligence: Reality, Risks and Opportunities.”

Opening the meeting, Patriarch Kirill described AI as an issue whose significance extends beyond current technological developments and concerns the future of humanity as a whole.

“One of the topics that will be considered today is of very great importance, not only for the present, but for the future of the human race in general,” the Patriarch said.

Patriarch Kirill noted that although artificial intelligence is primarily being studied and developed by the scientific community, its implications concern society more broadly.

He stressed that the subject cannot be a matter of indifference to anyone concerned about their own life, the future of their loved ones and the well-being of society.
