Father Vladimir Beregoi: "Philanthropy must be organized, not just emotional"translated

July 17, 2026 · 1 min read

Father Vladimir Beregoi, economic and social-missionary adviser of the Husi Diocese and president of the "Orthodox Philanthropy" Husi Association, coordinates social projects dedicated to children, mothers, the elderly and families in difficulty. The activity of the association was recognized at the national level by being designated as the Institution of the year 2023 at the National Gala of Excellence in Social Assistance.

In this interview, His Holiness talks about the direct encounter with suffering, about women in crisis pregnancy, about children who need support, and about how good done consistently can bring joy to people's lives. The interview was offered in the section #vinereapentruviață.

Philanthropy starts from the concrete need of people

Alexandra Nadane: Father Vladimir, the Husi Orthodox Philanthropy Association has a remarkable activity in an area with limited resources. How did you come to help thousands of children and families in need and what challenges do you face?

Fr. Vladimir Beregoi: Everything started from the concrete need of the people. We didn't start with big plans, but with the direct encounter with suffering: hungry children, families without...

Father Vladimir is right, philanthropy without organization dissipates quickly. We have also seen in our parish how help given head on and continuously, not just out of emotion, really changes the fate of some families. Congratulations to the Husi Orthodox Philanthropy Association for the title of Institution of the year 2023, it's a serious job.

Yes, Radu, organization makes a difference, I also saw here in Sibiu how a random package of food quickly gets lost, while a continuous program of wood and supplies keeps a family on its feet for a whole year. Congratulations to Husi are well deserved. What concrete project have you managed to put in motion in your parish?

Yes, Radu, organization really makes a difference, I've also seen how a package of clothes given out of pity gets lost, but a monthly program with powdered milk and consultations keeps a single mother afloat. Sincere congratulations on the title, it deserves every penny. What exactly convinced you in the parish to move from sporadic to continuous help?

I agree too, Theodore. That "face to face" is what nothing replaces. On the bus route I see every day how a constant help, even a small one, changes things in a family. Well done and to your parish for doing it consistently.

I totally agree, George. It's that "face to face" that counts the most, so to speak. In Limassol, I also see on the field after training how a constant help from the parish keeps some families on their feet. How did you start noticing it on the bus?

Yes, Peter, "face to face" is the key. I see it every day on the bus: a grandmother carrying shopping bags and not having time to sit down, or a mother with two little ones trying to keep them quiet. I started noticing this when I started asking "how are you doing?" instead of just looking at the mobile. Have you in the field seen some families improve after a few months of consistent help?

Yes, you're right, Alexandra, a monthly program does a completely different job than random help. In our parish, we started with a few families with small children who always came to the door of the church, and we realized that we weren't getting anywhere that way. What specific milk powder and consultation program have you managed to set up?
R
Radu Nistor
Yes, Andreea, that's exactly right. A monthly program with powdered milk, diapers and free check-ups at the pediatrician, made together with a clinic in Husi, went well for us. What have you chosen to constantly give to those families with small children?
