Fr. Beleris: When people are persecuted for their faith, silence becomes complicitytranslated

Today, July 16, 2026, MEP Fredis Beleris expressed his deep concern about the tension prevailing with Christians in Syria, in his statement during the meeting of the Petitions Committee (PETI) of the European Parliament. "The Christian Communities of Syria have been part of the history of the region for two thousand years," said the MEP, while emphasizing that "unfortunately, the persecutions, tortures and murders they are experiencing today are unprecedented."
In a post on his personal social media, he said:
"Silence is not neutrality. When people are persecuted for their faith, silence becomes complicity.
Syria's Christian communities face persecution, violence and insecurity. The international community and Europe cannot remain uninvolved. Defending religious freedom is not only a political obligation. It's a question of humanity."
