The fresco of St. Luke of Steiriotis in the Holy Church of Agios Demetrius – Patron Saint of Thessalonikitranslated

Among the precious remains of the Byzantine painting decoration preserved in the Holy Church of Agios Dimitrios in Thessaloniki, the full-length representation of Saint Luke of Steiriotis, also known as Saint Luke of Steri, stands out. The fresco is located on the second pesso from the east of the south colonnade of the central nave and has been dated by the relevant survey to the end of the 11th century.

The representation belongs to a later phase of the decoration of the early Christian basilica. It bears witness to the continuous artistic and functional renewal of the church during the Middle Byzantine period, when new figures of saints were added to its interior and were organically integrated into the older mosaic and painting decoration. Today's knowledge of these successive phases is largely due to the systematic research and restoration work carried out after the disastrous fire of 1917.

It is interesting that this fresco of Saint Luke of Stiris dates from the end of the 11th century and that it was added well after the older mosaics. I like the idea that we continued to renew the church like this, by integrating new saints into the existing decor. After the fire of 1917, we were really able to see all these successive layers thanks to the restorations.

It is interesting that the fresco of St. Luke of Steira was added at the end of the 11th century, on the second eastern pillar of the southern row of columns. A stern face, a long beard and hands in front of his chest in prayer - you can immediately see a real ascetic. It’s a pity that I didn’t see it in Thessaloniki myself, but after the fire of 1917, a lot of things were probably saved and taken apart in layers.

Yes, that's exactly it: we feel that the church was not static, saints were added as the spiritual needs of the community evolved. The fact that it is on the second southern pillar, integrated into the older mosaics, shows how everything fit together. Have you already visited Saint-Démétrios after the last restorations?

Yes, that’s exactly what I remember too: this idea of renewing the decor without breaking everything, by simply adding Saint Luke on the pillar. What struck me was the detail of the koukoulion on his head, it makes the ascetic even more concrete. Have you ever cooked a Greek dish with those monks who lived simply in mind?

The fresco of St Luke on that second eastern pillar of the south colonnade really caught my eye too. The long beard, the koukoulion and those hands held in prayer make him look exactly like the strict ascetics we read about in the lives of the saints. After the 1917 fire they must have worked hard to bring all those layers back to light.
