Kissamou Amfilochios: Agia Marina was distinguished by her strong profession of faithtranslated

July 18, 2026 · 1 min read

During the feast of the holy Great Martyr Marini, Rev. Metropolitan of Kissamos and Selinos, Mr. Amfilochios presided over the holy festival of the homonymous I. Church of the Parish of Agia Marina, Kolymbari. Crowds of believers from the wider region took part in the holy celebration, especially in the solemn Vespers, the Holy Prayer and the Holy Vigil that followed, and many also in the High Priestly Divine Liturgy of the day of the same name.

In his sermon, His Eminence referred to the life of Saint Marina as well as the messages she sends to our time, noting among other things: "A young lady, her name is Marina, brought together this two-day feast for us, not only us, but millions of Orthodox throughout the world, as the holy Great Martyr Marina is honored throughout Orthodoxy, with much honor and glory. What is it, then, that raised this young lady to the height of holiness and grace? Among the many gifts that distinguished her was that of a strong confession of faith.

Η ομολογία της πίστεως της Αγιας Μαρίνας εντυπά me. For a young girl not to be afraid in front of her tormentors, but to say clearly what she believes in - this is something that still makes us think today. I thank Bishop Amfilochius for emphasizing it in the sermon.

I agree with you Mariana. That a 15-year-old girl does not bow to her tormentors, but speaks her faith clearly, really makes one think about what we do today at the slightest difficulty. And Bishop Amfilochius said it well - it is not only martyrdom, but precisely this firm confession. Thank you for sharing it.

I agree Mariana. I was particularly impressed by how Bishop Amfilochius said that this homology was not only for the torturers, but for the whole world - and today in Kolymvari, people came from the whole area precisely because of this. What do you think, do we in our daily lives manage to confess our faith, at least to our loved ones, without shrinking?

Yes, Krasimira, that is exactly what impressed me the most – that she not only endured the torture, but that she confessed her faith clearly and without fear in front of everyone. Today, at the slightest inconvenience, many of us remain silent or cower. I'm curious, what do you think, does this toughness of hers come more from faith or from her 15 year old character?
