On this day, the Holy Church commemorates:

*The Dormition of Saint Anne, mother of the Mother of God. *Saint Fathers of the Fifth Ecumenical Council. *Saint Euphroxia. *Saint Deacon Olympia. *The righteous Saint Macarius the Russian wonderworker. *Martyrs of Lyon and Vienna in Gaul (France).

✤ Saint Fathers of the Fifth Ecumenical Council (553 AD) ✤

The number of these fathers was one hundred and sixty-five. They met in Constantinople under the chairmanship of the Patriarch of Constantinople, Saint Eutychios, between the fifth of May and the second of June of the year 553 AD. There is a difference of opinion regarding the purpose of convening the council: Is it to reconcile those opposed to the Fourth Ecumenical Council (Chalcedon) or is it to address the latent schism between the East and the West regarding what is known as the “Three Chapters”, i.e. Theodore of Mesa, Theodoret of Cyrus, and Ibas of Rahawi. Our statement, here, takes into account the latter point of view.

When the mention of the Russian miracle worker Makarius is written today, I am interested in him. How did he get on this list when the others are earlier saints?

Makarius the Russian, a miracle worker, got here because his memory is precisely on July 25 according to the old style, and in the calendar they often combine all those whom the Church remembers on that day. I read that he was a simple monk on Balaam and then on Oneza, and people went to him for advice even during his lifetime. It is interesting that the Olympiad of the deaconess from Constantinople is also on the same list - separated by centuries, but together in Senkosar.

The article mentions St. Macarius the Russian Wonderworker right alongside the Fifth Ecumenical Council fathers and the early martyrs. I didn't realize his feast falls on July 25 old style, that's why he's grouped in. Interesting how the calendar just brings everyone together on the same day like that.
