Archbishop Eugenios of Crete: I am deeply saddened for those imprisoned (VIDEO)translated

July 10, 2026 · 1 min read

It may have been the first time Archbishop Eugenios of Crete visited the detention center of the newly established Messara Police Substation, yet, as he explained in response to a question from Cretalive, it was not the first time he had encountered such scenes. He recalled stories of individuals who had found themselves on the dark side of life and justice. “I am deeply saddened for those who are imprisoned,” he emphasized.

During his fifteen years of service as Bishop of Petras and Chersonisos, Archbishop Eugenios frequently visited the prisons of Neapolis. There, as he recounted, he met dozens of individuals, many from Messara, whose stories left an indelible mark on his memory.

It is touching what Archbishop Eugène says. I too remember an inmate at Neapoli prison who cried like that during a service; we feel that these visits really leave an impression on people. May God have mercy on all those behind bars.

That story about the prisoner holding the censer at his wife’s memorial and breaking down really stuck with me. Archbishop Eugenios visiting Neapoli prison all those years shows how much one-on-one time can matter. Praying the same mercy reaches the guys in Messara now.

There is an interesting story about the prisoner who held a censer at the memorial service for his murdered wife and burst into tears. Archbishop Evgeniy, apparently, has seen many such fates in 15 years in the prisons of Naples. We pray that in the new police of Mesara people will find such humanity, and not only cold walls.

It is interesting that that man could not stand it at the memorial service for his wife. Evidently, the conscience woke up at that moment. I also think that in the new Mesara police it would be good if they found time for such simple humanity, and not only for protocols.
