Syros: Impressive representation of the naming of Ermoupolistranslated

July 13, 2026 · 1 min read

In the forecourt of the Holy Church of the Transfiguration of Hermoupolis, the anniversary event titled "ERMOUPOLIN!" was held with great success yesterday, which was organized by the Greek Greek High School of Syros and included a theatrical journey through time, bringing to life the great historical meeting of the first settlers in 1826, exactly in the same forecourt, where the name of the city was decided.

The historical role of Metropolitan Sophronios Bistis was performed by His Holiness Mr. Dorotheos II, who had previously performed a special doxological prayer inside the Holy Church.

During the ceremony, the eulogy of the day was delivered by Aidesimol with his characteristic elegance and historical depth. Protopr. Emmanuel Syrigos, who, emotionally charged, referred to the events and people of that time.

As part of the event, the President of the Lyceum of Greek Women of Syros Mrs. Irini Dekavalla placed a wreath on the bust of the Teacher of the Genus Anthimos Gazis and raised the historical flag of the Fishermen's Revolution on the central mast of the Church.

It's nice that they revived that congregation from 1826 in the exact same place. Metropolitan Dorotheus played the role of Sophronius Bista beautifully, and priest Syrigos is always good when he talks about old times. Well, at least they raised the flag from Psara, that was particularly interesting to me.

They did well and set it up again in the forecourt of the Metamorphosis, exactly where the assembly took place. I liked that Dorotheus played Sophronius Bistis, and the Fisherman's flag raised by Decavalla was a nice detail. Syrigos always speaks with soul, we know that.

Yes, it's really nice that they did it in the same place where the assembly used to be held. To me, the most interesting thing was that Metropolitan Dorotheus personally played Sophronius - that gives it some weight. Did you see the video of the raising of the flag from Psara, how it looked live?

Yes, it's really nice that they chose the same courtyard of the church, one can imagine how it looked in 1826. I remember the flag from Psara the most - when Irini raised it, the wind unfolded it so beautifully that only an "uh" could be heard from the world. Have you ever been to Psar, to see where they got that flag from?

Yes, it's really nice that they did it all in the same place, it really connects the past and the present. Dorotheus as Sophronius was a good move, the man has authority. I didn't watch the video of the flag, how did it look live, did it flutter properly in the wind?
