Barnabas of Neapolis will lead the liturgy on August 23 at Panagia Sumela in Pontustranslated

July 8, 2026 · 1 min read

At the historic monastery of Panagia Sumela in Trabzon, Pontus, on August 23, the Metropolitan of Neapolis and Stavroupolis, Mr. Varnavas, will be present, who will preside over the triarchial liturgy.  His Holiness Mr. Varnavas was on Monday July 6th at Fanari where he was received for hearing by the Ecumenical Patriarch Mr. Bartholomew.

It is recalled that the Turkish authorities granted the required permits so that on the occasion of the celebration of the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the following will be performed:

a) Divine Liturgy of the Superior of A.Th. His Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in the ruins of the Holy Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni in Artaki, Kyzikos, and

b) High Priestly Divine Liturgy at the St. Monastery of Panagia Soumela, in Trebizond.

It is good that the Turkish authorities gave permission for the liturgy on August 23 in Sumela. I hope that Metropolitan Barnabas will lead it well and that there will be many believers from Pontus. It is interesting that on the same day the Patriarch will serve in Artaki.

It is good news that the Turkish authorities have given permission for the August 23 liturgy in Sumela. I hope that Mgr Barnabas will have a lot of people from Pontus that day, especially with the Feast of the Dormition. Interesting that the Patriarch serves at the same time in Artaki.

It's good that they gave permission for Sumela on August 23. Metropolitan Barnabas will lead the service, and the Patriarch will serve in Artaki on the same day - it will be interesting how the people will be distributed. I hope there are Pontians to get there, especially after the feast of the Assumption.

It is good that the Turkish authorities also gave permission for Sumela on August 23. Metropolitan Barnabas will lead the service there, and the Patriarch the same day in Artaki - it will be interesting how the people will be distributed. I hope there are enough Pontians to make it to the monastery, especially after the Assumption.

Good to see the Turkish authorities gave the go-ahead for both services on the 23rd. Metropolitan Barnabas leading at Sumela makes sense with the Dormition feast, though it’ll be interesting how many Pontic folk actually make the trip up there that day.

Yes, it's good that they gave permission for Sume la as well. Barnabas is an energetic bishop, he will manage, but I really wonder how many Pontians will manage to go all the way to Trebizond exactly on the 23rd. Do you think most will prefer Artaki with the Patriarch?

Yes, I wonder the same thing - the way to Trebizond is much longer and tiring, especially with children. Barnabas is really energetic, but I think most Pontians will choose Artaki with the Patriarch because it's more accessible there. What do you think, will you go to either?
