THE SKEPTICISM OF MAN By Fr Dimitrios Bokus

Countless multitudes (five thousand men, not counting women and children), carrying their patients, sought Christ in the wilderness where he was. Christ, seeing them as "sheep without a shepherd", took pity on them and taught them a lot "about the kingdom of God".

Night came, but no one was leaving. The students expressed their anguish: Dismiss them, to look for food in the nearest villages. But Christ said: "You give them to eat." The students fell from the clouds! "We have only five loaves and two fish." How is it possible for so many people to eat? Can we go and buy food for so many people? Even the huge sum of two hundred dinars would not be enough, not to satisfy them, but not for everyone to get a piece (Matthew 8th Sunday).

And in our parish, when the priest reads us this Gospel, I always think of Philip. The Lord purposely asks him, knowing full well that they have nothing, just to see him messing around with human calculations. Sometimes I do the same in the garden: I know I don't have enough water, but I keep calculating how much to water each row of tomatoes. Good thing Christ doesn't wait for us to solve everything.

Father, it is interesting how the disciples keep getting lost in the same human calculations - five loaves, two fish, two hundred denarii, and then the same for four thousand. It also happens to me in the garden: I know that there is little rain, but I still count buckets and think about how to stretch. And the Lord simply takes what is there and is enough. Thanks for the hint.

Yes, Galina, those students really stepped on the same rake again and again, even after the first miracle. This happens to me too - I ride a minibus, look at the empty tank and wonder if there will be enough for the whole day, although I know that the Lord always arranges somehow. Did you have any cucumbers this year?
