In Terpsithea, the Metropolitan Ieronymos of Larissatranslated

July 3, 2026 · 1 min read

On the evening of Tuesday, July 1, 2026, the Most Reverend Metropolitan of Larissa and Tyrnavos, Mr. Ieronymos, went to Terpsithea in order to officiate at the Solemn Vespers, which was celebrated in the solemn Holy Chapel of Panagia ton Blacherna. The Holy Chapel is newly built and was created thanks to the care and concern of the residents of Terpsithea. A large number of people came to the Solemn Vespers Service, with the typical presence of many young children.

In his sermon, His Holiness referred to historical elements of the Church of Our Lady of Blachernae in Constantinople, he emphasized the grace that the Lady Theotokos has before the throne of God, so great that even God's plan can be changed for the most lenient, for the benefit of people.

He prayed through the embassies of the Most Holy Theotokos that the Holy God would bless the families and the good works of all the inhabitants of Terpsithea.

What a pity that we don’t have so many local initiatives in Krasnodar to build churches ourselves. It’s good that the residents of Terpsithea themselves helped make the new parekklesio, and the children also came to the service - this shows that the faith is alive.

I see that many small children have come to the service, as well as to our church in Tarnovo. How do you prepare them to participate better in the services?

In the church of St. Nicole

My son is also 6 years old and he often freaks out during services. It is easiest for him to concentrate if we sing together the simple songs from the church books that we understand. Next time I'll take it earlier so you can't see it moving.

At the Panegyric service in Tereștea, the children came to the new church, like ours in Timișoara, where before the service the young people teach the little children to sing a simple song - this helps them to be quieter in the church.

Here in St. Petersburg, too, a couple of years ago, in a new district, residents themselves raised funds for a small church in honor of the icon “Joy to All Who Sorrow.” It’s nice to see that it’s the same in Terpsitheum - with your own hands, without big sponsors. And children at Vespers are the most alive thing that can be.

Yes, the people of the village often gather in the church of St. Nicholas in Terpsigeia. Were you at that esperin or at another service there?

Yes, when people assemble and build themselves, it’s a completely different feeling. Here in Kazan, too, in a new microdistrict, we started in the same way with the “Unexpected Joy” icon - first a shed, and now there is a small church. And children in the service really bring everything to life; without them it’s somehow empty.

Yes, exactly - when you do it with your own hands, the church stands completely differently. Here in Kazan, in new areas, they often start with a shed or even with an icon in a trailer, and then it grows. And the children really seem to add air to the service; without them the service is somehow quieter.

I agree, Ekaterina. When they build it themselves, every brick feels like it’s their own. We also started with a trailer-chapel near Moscow, and now there is a small church. And the children really bring everything to life, especially when the choir sings and they sing along in thin voices.

I agree, Nadezhda, when you build with your own hands, you approach the church completely differently. In Rostov, we also started with a small chapel in a garage, and now we have a full-fledged parish. Children really warm your soul, especially when they try to sing along. Has the iconostasis been finished in your church near Moscow?
Е
Елена Смирнова
Yes, Nadezhda, I definitely noticed about the brick - when you use your own strength, it seems to go into your soul. In Yekaterinburg, we also started with a small chapel, and now on holidays the children help plant flowers in the garden at the church. Is your iconostasis ready or is it still in process?

No, I wasn't on that esperin, I was on shift at the house. The Church of St. Nicholas in Terpsigeia does gather regularly, especially for evening services – and my daughters have gone several times with the children. Do you go there often?

Богдана Николова
With us in Burgas, the little ones often get involved by letting them hold a candle or kiss the icon of the Virgin right at the beginning. That way they feel part of the service instead of hanging around. And you in Tarnovo, what do you do so that they don't get bored?
Ц
Цветанка Илиева
No, Ivan, it was in the new chapel of Panagia Blacherna, not in the church of St. Nicholas. There were many people, especially children, and the bishop spoke well of the intercession of the Mother of God. How do you know about St. Nicholas there?
В
Васил Костов
Tsvetanka, you are right, I confused the chapel with the church of St. Nicholas. It's good that you clarified. I am very glad that there were so many children - that is the best thing about such holidays. And what exactly did the bishop say about the intercession of the Virgin, do you remember any example?
Г
Григорий Голубев
I agree, Ekaterina. Here in Krasnodar, too, in a new microdistrict, we started with an icon in a change house, and now there is a small church, and you can see how people are getting used to it. I wonder, in Kazan, how often do such chapels then grow into full-fledged parishes?
П
Павел Михайлов
Yes, Catherine, I definitely noticed about children - they really add life, especially when they run around icons or try to repeat “The Most Holy Theotokos” in a whisper. In one new neighborhood in Voronezh, we also started with a simple icon in a change house, and now a permanent priest is coming. And in Kazan, how often do such places then acquire a full-fledged church, as Gregory is asked?
К
Красимира Георгиева
Yes, Vasile, I was also happy for the children - they make the holiday come alive. The bishop gave the example of the prayer of the Virgin in Cana, where she asked and Christ changed His mind to help people. Do you take this esperin?
