The Hellenic Red Cross and the Lung Association of Greece organize a clean-up action on Eden beachtranslated

The Hellenic Red Cross (E.E.S.), in collaboration with the Union of Pulmonologists of Greece, is organizing a large environmental action to clean up Eden beach (P. Faliro), with the participation of 50 elementary school students, on Tuesday, July 21, from 09:30 to 11:30, with the aim of promoting environmental awareness and volunteerism. The great environmental action will be attended by the President of the Hellenic Red Cross, Dr. Antonios Avgerinos, as well as the President of the Union of Pulmonologists of Greece, Mrs. Stamatoula (Mata) Tsikrikas.

During the action, the 5th and 6th grade students from the summer camp of the Municipality of Papagos - Cholargos, under the guidance of volunteers and staff of the Youth Section of the Hellenic Red Cross, will participate in cleaning the beach, while receiving information on the effects of marine pollution, climate change and human activity on ecosystems.

At the same time, the Union of Pulmonologists of Greece will highlight the close connection between environmental protection and the health of the respiratory system, focusing particularly on the harmful effects of smoking and air pollution.

It's good that they bring the children from the summer camp of the Father. Cleaning the toilet is useful, but it is even better to talk to them about respiratory health and smoking together. I hope it's not just one time.

Good to see the kids from the Papagou-Cholargou summer camp getting their hands dirty on Eden beach instead of just sitting inside. Teaching them about lung health and smoking right there on the spot makes it stick better than any classroom talk. Hope the pulmonologists keep following up with the schools after this one day.

Good point, Maria. Indeed, one day is not enough - these children must be explained that sea pollution and smoke damage the lungs in the same way. I also wonder how much they will continue to talk about this topic at school.

Yeah, getting the kids out on the actual beach instead of just watching a video about it is what makes it real. My older daughter did something similar with her school last year and still talks about the plastic they pulled out of the sand. Do you think one morning is enough, or should the pulmonologists really set up a few follow-up visits like you said?

Vakhtang, I completely agree with you - one day is really short. Explaining to children how marine litter and smoke damage the lungs alike is fine, but continuing in school is very important. What do you think, is it enough to talk about it only in biology class?

Well said Vakhtang, marine litter and smoke both damage the lungs. And I think that it should not be left alone in the biology class, it is better to add spring projects so that the children can clean up a small area themselves. What would you say, will such a thing be done in the enzyme club?

Yeah, hands-on like that sticks with them — my daughter still remembers the old fishing net we dragged out of the river on a church youth trip years ago. One morning gets their attention, but you're right, a couple of follow-up talks from the lung docs would make it sink in deeper. Did your daughter end up picking up less trash herself after that school thing?

Yeah, hands-on like that beats a lecture any day. My kid's school did a similar cleanup last summer and he still picks up every bottle cap he sees on the beach now. Do the pulmonologists usually run follow-up talks in the classrooms too?

I think it is better to talk about this in school not only in biology, but also in religion class, so that children understand how we should take care of the world created by God. I agree Levan, sea pollution and smoke both damage the lungs, no doubt about that. Talking in religion class is fine, but children remember more than what they do themselves. That's why I like hands-on days like this one at Eden Beach. Does your child have this experience?
