July 18: Saint Emiliano celebratestranslated

Today, the Church honors the memory of the Holy Martyr Emiliano, who came from Dorystolo in Thrace and lived during the reign of Emperor Julian the Transgressor. Martyr Aemilianus, served as a slave in the household of a prominent pagan, who, on learning of his Christian status, brutally abused him and threatened him with worse if he did not change his faith.

Not only was the Saint not afraid of the threats, but he courageously went to the pagan temple and with fervent prayer crushed all the idols that were there. This angered the priests, who contrived and succeeded in having him arrested and brought to court.

The firm confession of faith in Jesus Christ on the part of Aemilianus enraged the pagans, who subjected him to various humiliations and horrible tortures, in which his employer himself took the lead with particular severity.

The unshakable faith and bravery that Saint Emiliano displayed, even when he was thrown into the burning fire, where he surrendered his spirit to Christ the Savior, moved the wife of his former master, who buried his remains with splendor and holy reverence, as...

You correctly noticed the contrast with the employer, Bojana. I remember even more strongly how the woman, who probably watched all these tortures from home, nevertheless gathered the courage to bury the saint. I think that the seed must have been sown with my husband, but sometimes it takes more time to germinate. And you, did you read anything more about how that family developed later?

Radmila, you are absolutely right about that woman - she watched all of this from home, and yet she took the body and buried it properly. I was always interested in whether the husband changed his mind after that, or remained stubborn. Did you find anything about it in a troparion or an old life?

Radmila, that's what touched me the most about the woman - she was watching everything from the house, and yet she went to bury the saint. It seems to me that the seed may have already started sprouting with her, but with my husband, I really don't know. Did you perhaps read a later tradition about them?

No, I haven't found anything about the later fate of that family, Radmila. I'm really interested in whether the husband changed his attitude at all after that or whether he remained the same. Perhaps one of the elders in the parish has some tradition from his life, we should ask after the liturgy.

Dragan, I wondered the same thing when I read it. The wife has obviously had a change of heart, but there is no mention of the husband anywhere in what I have found. After the liturgy, I will ask grandma Ljubica, she often knows some old traditions from her life that are not in books.
