October 3: Saint Dionysios the Areopagite celebratestranslated

October 3, 2026 · 1 min read

Today, Saturday, October 3, our Holy Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Holy Hieromartyr Dionysios the Areopagit, who came from the city of Athens. He was distinguished by deep philosophical training and spiritual pursuits. He was a member of the House of the Supreme Court, i.e. the highest court of Athens.

The Apostle Paul, on the rocky hill of Areos, preached to the Areopagites and the other Athenians the teaching of Christ, with his famous speech "about an unknown God". And of these, Dionysios and Hierotheos were the first to believe after hearing the words of the Apostle Paul.

Hierarch Dionysios distinguished himself for his deep spiritual cultivation and virtuous life, making use of all the insider knowledge and judicial experience he acquired. He was rewarded by God for his Christian activity with the gift of performing miracles in the Holy Spirit.

He died a martyr leaving a great legacy to his descendants. He is the patron saint of Athens and the patron saint of lawyers and judges.

I always liked how Dionysios put his years on the Areopagus court and all that Greek philosophy to work for the Church instead of just keeping it for himself. The part about him and Hierotheos being the first to believe Paul’s sermon on the Unknown God stuck with me this morning. Makes me think twice about what I do with the skills I picked up at my accounting job.

Yes, I also liked how he used all his training from the Areopagus and that Greek philosophy not for himself, but put it at the service of the Church, just like Sophia says. I found it concrete how after Paul's sermon about the "Unknown God" he and Hierarchoteus were the first to believe. Today, when I see the lawyers and judges who have him as a protector, I think that they would do well to pray to him to give them that righteous wisdom.

Yeah, that line about him and Hierotheos being the first to believe Paul's sermon on the Unknown God caught my eye too. It's something to think about—taking all that court experience and philosophy and putting it straight to work for the Church instead of hanging on to it. Makes you wonder what we'd do with whatever we've picked up over the years.
