Sunday Discipleship – Generous Like Godtranslated

October 3, 2026 · 1 min read

The determining factor for any act of benefit to one's neighbor is freedom. Only then can it be loving. In any other case, it is directly or indirectly selfish and therefore illiberal. According to the Apostle Paul, freedom in this case is undermined on the one hand by internal coercion, as a product of the need for faithful application of moral rules and legal provisions, and on the other hand by distress and narrow-mindedness, i.e. stinginess. Thus both what a needy person gives and the reason for doing so are lost. But the imitator of God behaves otherwise. He gives with joy and with ease, just like God. He gives without expecting any return.

Thus, what begins as a gift from God ends up through the neighbor and back to God, since everything must be done for his glory, explains Apostolos Nikolaidis, Emeritus Professor of Theology at EKPA & President of the Institute Agios Maximos the Greek, on the show Sunday Apprenticeship.

Yes, that internal compulsion from the rules and that heart-wrenching frugality really spoils everything. When a person gives with joy and without expectation, as St. Paul, so it goes on through the other back to God. Quite practical and heavy at the same time, I will think about it for the next donation.

That line about how tightfistedness and forcing yourself by rules both kill the gift really hit home. I catch myself doing the second one all the time when I’m just ticking off the “I should help” box instead of giving like I mean it. Going to keep that “through the neighbor and back to God” part in my head next time the collection plate or the parish food drive comes around.

Yes, this part with the inner pressure of rules and the narrow-mindedness hit me too. I often find myself giving something out of obligation and then mentally calculating instead of really doing it freely and happily. Thanks for the reference to the Apostle Paul – I’ll take that with me into next week.
