The Fifteenth of August and the Silence of the Virgin Marytranslated

The fifteenth of August is one of the most profound holidays of Orthodoxy. It is not simply the feast of the Assumption; it is for us Christians the feast of the greatest man who ever passed the earth and whose life was completed without noise, without show, without any claim to authority. The Virgin Mary, the greatest person in the world, is at the same time the most silent.

He speaks little in the Gospels. She does not leave behind a system of ideas, she does not write books, she does not claim position, office or recognition. Even when it is at the center of the larger event of the Christian faith, it almost always remains on the sidelines of the narrative. Because he knows he has nothing more to add.

One of her few lines, at the wedding of Cana, seems to sum up her entire attitude towards the world: "Whatever he tells you, do it." She does not direct the eyes towards herself. She turns them to her Son.

Perhaps this is the great significance of her silence. As if he is telling us: "I have nothing more to say to you. He told you everything."
