August 22, 1935: The admiral and politician Pavlos Kountouriotis passes awaytranslated

Pavlos Kountouriotis was a Hydrian soldier and politician, a hero of the Balkan Wars (1912-1913) and the first President of the Second Hellenic Republic. He was a scion of the famous Kountouriotis family, he was born in Hydra on April 9, 1855. He was the son of the consul of Malta, Theodoros Kountouriotis (1824 – 1870) and Loukia Negrepontis (1831 – 1875) and the grandson of the shipwright and politician Georgios Kountouriotis (1782- 1858).
After his circular studies he enlisted in the Navy in 1874 and attended the Naval School, as the School of Naval Cadets was then called. He graduated from the school in 1877 with the rank of First Officer and was successively promoted to lieutenant (1881) and lieutenant (1884). When the conscription of 1886 was declared by the government of Theodoros Diligiannis, he was appointed commander-in-chief of the gunboats "A" and "B" and sailed unmolested into the mouth of Preveza to cover the movements of the Greek army towards Arta and the Akarnan coasts by the two Turkish warships that were anchored in the Ambraki Gulf.
