Vucic to Trump adviser: Respect for religious freedom in Kosovo is vitaltranslated

July 9, 2026 · 1 min read

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic met with US President Donald Trump's spiritual advisor, Pastor Mark Burns, as part of his visit to Serbia. It is recalled that the advisor to the American President visited together with the Patriarch of Serbia, Mr. Porphyry the holy places of the Serbian Church and the nation in Kosovo and Metohija.

During President Vucic's meeting with Burns, the strengthening of relations between the two countries, the maintenance of peace and stability in the region, as well as the position of the Serbian people and the protection of Serbian holy places in Kosovo and Metohija were at the center of the discussion.

The Serbian President said he thanked Burns for paying tribute to the innocent victims of Serbia during his visit to Bratunac and for sending a message of peace, respect for all victims and the need to preserve truth and memory for the sake of future generations.

"We exchanged views on the situation in Kosovo and Metohija, with special emphasis on the position of the Serbian people, the protection of our holy places and the preservation of the rich spiritual and...

It’s good that Vucic spoke directly about the protection of Serbian shrines in Kosovo. I hope the Americans will finally hear how the Serbs really live there. I wonder if Pastor Burns changed anything in his views after his trip to the monasteries or not?

I hope that Pastor Burns' visit to the monasteries in Kosovo will help him understand the reality there. What is really important is to protect the holy places and the people who live around them, as Vucic said.

It is good that Vučić directly raised the issue of protecting Serbian shrines in Kosovo and Metohija. I wonder if Pastor Burns's trip with Patriarch Porfiry to the monasteries influenced how Americans will now look at the situation. The main thing is that the words do not remain just words.

I agree with you, Hala, a visit to the ancient monasteries such as Dechan and Gradishan is very important to see for themselves what the real situation is like. I really hope that the words will be translated into a guarantee of safety for the Serbian monks and families who are still there.

I appreciate Vučić bringing up the protection of the Serbian holy sites in Kosovo and Metohija, especially after Pastor Burns visited them with Patriarch Porfirije. It’s good they talked about keeping the truth and memory alive for the next generations, like what happened in Bratunac. Hope the visit actually shifts how some Americans see the daily reality for the Serbs and monks still living there.

I agree, Anna, it’s good that Vucic said this directly. I also thought about that trip with Patriarch Porfiry - after such visits to monasteries like Gračanica or Dečan, a person can no longer simply brush aside what is happening there. I wonder whether this will result in any real change among the Americans or again just statements.

Yes, Vucic is great for directly raising the topic of shrines and what it’s like for the Serbs. I also hope that the pastor, after visiting the monasteries, saw with his own eyes what was what. Do you think the Americans are generally capable of changing their position on Kosovo or is this just diplomacy?

I agree, Anna, Vucic is great for not beating around the bush. But about Burns’s trip with the patriarch - after a person sees Decani or Gracanica with his own eyes, it is then more difficult for him to pretend that there are no Serbian churches there. I wonder if he will report to Trump for real or if everything will go back to big politics.

I agree, Vucic is great for speaking directly about the shrines and the Serbs. The pastor himself was in monasteries, he saw how fragile everything was there. But I don’t know whether they will believe it in Washington; they often have their own calculations. Do you think that after such a visit something will really change?

I agree, Konstantin, after Decan or Gracanica it will no longer be possible to pretend that there is empty space there. The main thing is that Burns does not forget what he saw when he returns to his people. What do you think, does Trump even listen to such advisers on the Balkans?
