October 4: Saint Ierotheos, Bishop of Athens celebratestranslated

October 4, 2026 · 1 min read

Today, October 4, the Church honors the memory of Saint Ierotheos, bishop of Athens, who was a member of the Parliament of the Supreme Court, like Saint Dionysios whom we celebrated yesterday, Saint Theodoros, bishop of Tamasos, as well as Saint John the Lampadistos the miracle worker. We also celebrate the memory of the Holy Martyr Avdaktos and his daughter Kallisthenis. By LAMBROS K. SKONTZOU, Theologian - Professor

Agios Ierotheos: The divine first Bishop of Athens The city of Athens has been, since ancient times, the cradle of world civilization. In it, the first democracy in the world was born and for the first time man was recognized as a value and human rights began to be respected. In it the greatest philosophers of antiquity were born and worked, letters were cultivated and art reached its peak. Saint Ierotheos, first bishop of Athens and member of the Supreme Court like Dionysios we celebrated yesterday. I liked that it reminds us that even in a city full of philosophers and democracy, faith found its way. May he be an ambassador for us and for our parish here in Albania.

Yes, Andrea, I liked what you said about the connection with our Durrës — even in Athens full of philosophy, faith opened the way like in us. Hierotheus reminds us that no city is so wise that it does not need Christ. Pray for our children at school and for our church here.

Yes Olympia, I especially liked when you said about the kids at school – my little girl is learning about the history of Athens this week and I asked her if she knew about Hierotheus. It is true, neither Durrës nor Athens can survive without Him. He also prays for us here in Elbasan.

Yes, Olympias, I especially liked the part you said about Hierotheus as a reminder that no wise city is sufficient without Christ. I too, reading about the Areopagus, thought of the days when I go to Berat and see how old philosophy and faith live side by side in the old streets. Do you have a special photo from a visit to Athens that reminds you of this?
