Fire protection on Mount Athos is on constant alerttranslated

July 23, 2026 · 1 min read

During the summer season, the fire protection forces are on constant alert on Mount Athos, an area with several peculiarities that increase the possibility of a fire and make the work of the fire brigade difficult. The preparation started early, last spring, while at the request of the Fire Service of Mount Athos, a team of the army proceeded to check the forest road network, which in the winter months suffers great damage due to the heavy rains. At the points where interventions were required, improvements were made with a land leveler and trucks, while at the same time the water intake points and water reservoirs were checked.

"This year is a difficult year because we have increased temperatures and due to the heavy rains of the winter, the forest and grassland vegetation was very dense", points out, speaking to APE-MPE, the commander of the Fire Department of Karion, deputy fire chief Vasilios Psaltidis. It is a good thing that they check the forest paths from spring, because after the winter rains on Mount Athos they really become damaged. Vasilios Psaltidis rightly says that the vegetation this year is very dense due to the rains and the heat. I hope they don't have to intervene, but it's good that each monastery cleans up its own part.

You are right, Desislava, after the winter rains, the roads there really become like dug-out rivers. I personally wonder if they have reached those steeper sections towards the hermitage of St. Anne, where the equipment is difficult to pass. If you know, tell me - do they do such repairs every year or only now because of the heat?

Yes, the roads to St. Anna are really the hardest - last year the church group and I went there and the equipment could barely cope with the mud. This time they must have gone deeper, because they mentioned that they leveled with a grader. Do you go to Mount Athos often, Athanasius?

No, I don't go often, Christo, the last time was five or six years ago and then to St. Anna was really like after a downpour - stones and holes. I wonder if this spring they also reached those higher parts where the machinery can hardly turn. Athanasius, did you hear from Caries, or from the monks?
