Amerikis Elpidophoros: "Peace and justice are still a demand for Cyprus"translated

July 21, 2026 · 1 min read

Peace and justice are still a demand for Cyprus, states, among others, the Most Reverend Archbishop of America Mr. Elpidophoros in his statement, on the occasion of the anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. "On today's sad anniversary, we remember the illegal Turkish invasion of Cyprus and the occupation that began 52 years ago. Peace and justice are still an issue for Cyprus. We reaffirm our unwavering solidarity with Cyprus and its people. We continue to pray and work for a just, peaceful and sustainable solution, which will lead to the reunification of the island," he wrote in an Instagram post.

Amen, may God grant peace and justice to Cyprus. 52 years of occupation is too much trouble for the people there, I remember how we followed it on the news. To pray and work for unification, as the Archbishop says.

Amen, Alexander. I also remember how in the seventies we watched it on the black and white television at home, and my father just kept silent and turned his head. Good that the Archbishop made it clear – prayer and work for unification, not just words. What do you think, is there any hope now after all these years?

Amen, Alexander. I remember how in the eighties we were listening to the radio in my grandmother's kitchen and she was saying, "God, give those people peace." It is good that the Archbishop does not leave only words, but also mentions work. Do you think that the unification can start from a small step now?
