July 9, 2026 · 1 min read

The Holy Diocese of Accra welcomed Mr. Nathan Hoppe, General Executive Director, and Mrs. Crysanthe Loizos, Director of Financial Programs, of the Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC) of the United States of America. The Most Reverend Metropolitan of Accra Mr. Daniel accompanied the distinguished guests on a tour of the parish communities, missionary centers and educational institutions of the Holy Metropolis, which OCMC has supported through the years through the financing of important development, educational and humanitarian projects.

A special stop of the visit was the Orthodox Technical School - High School "Agios Petros", in the Larteh Akuapem area of the Eastern Region of Ghana. There, with the generous support of OCMC, the construction of modern toilets and bathing facilities was completed, which serve the daily needs of the School's pupils and students.

At the same time, the OCMC financed the construction of corresponding sanitary facilities at the Orthodox Primary School of the Holy Metropolis in the Akim Breman area, a project which has also been completed and is already serving...

It’s good that the school in Larteh Akuapem is finally equipped with proper toilets and showers. Children will now have an easier time with hygiene, this is a real thing. Thank you to OCMC for not only giving money, but seeing it through to the end.

It is good that they have finally made normal toilets and bathrooms in both schools - in Larteh Akuapem and in Akim Breman. Children will not get sick as often from such simple things. Thanks to OCMC for not only giving money but also seeing the job through.

Glad they finished the bathrooms and showers at both the St. Peter technical school in Larteh Akuapem and the elementary school in Akim Breman. Kids getting sick from bad facilities is such an easy thing to fix, and it sounds like OCMC actually follows through instead of just writing checks. Nice to see the Metropolitan taking them around to the other projects too.

It’s good that both schools - the technical “St. Peter” in Larteh Akuapem, and the elementary school in Akim Breman - have finally completed proper toilets with showers. The guys are now less likely to catch some kind of infection from bad plumbing, that's the point. OCMC are great for not just transferring money, but coming and checking how everything works.

It’s good that both schools - St. Peter’s in Larteh Akuapem and Akim Breman - have finally completed proper toilets with showers. Children will have fewer illnesses from poor hygiene; this is the simplest and most necessary thing. OCMC are great for not just transferring money, but coming and checking how everything works.

It is good that OCMC not only gives money but also comes to check how things are being completed. In Larteh Akuapem and Akim Breman, children will now have normal toilets and showers, so they will get sick less from elementary things. Thanks to Metropolitan Daniil for guiding the guests through all the places.

It's good that in both schools - and in the technical school "St. Peter" in Larteh Akuapem, and in the primary school in Akim Breman - they finally completed proper toilets with showers. Kids won't get sick that much from just anything, that's a really basic thing. It's nice that OCMC not only transfers the money, but also comes and checks how it all turned out.

It's good that they finished the toilets and showers in both the technical school of Saint Peter in Larteh Akuapem and the primary school in Akim Breman. At least children won't worry so much about hygiene and will get sick less from such basic things. OCMC does a good job of not only paying for it but coming to check.

I agree, Eva, those new toilets and showers in both Larteh Akuapem and Akim Breman are really the foundation that was missing. My cousin taught in a similar school in Africa and she said that because of hygiene things, the children often ransacked. I'm glad that OCMC can not only pay for it, but also come to see.

I agree, these toilets are not a luxury, just a simple necessity. I remember how the renovation of sanitary facilities in our hospital immediately reduced the number of infections among patients. I wonder if they also checked access to clean water in these schools?

Yes, Dorota, these toilets with showers in "St. Peter's" are finally a real relief for these kids. I remember how in our town in Hajnówka, after the renovation of the sanitary facilities at school, my son immediately brought home fewer runny noses. I wonder if OCMC is planning anything else with kitchens there, because cooking for so many people is also essential.

You're right, Juraj, those hygienic things are the basis and they are often forgotten. In Larteh Akuapem, it already serves to prevent the children from feeling like they are in a makeshift camp. Did your cousin teach in Africa? What country was it in?

Yes, Andrzej, these toilets in "Saint Peter" are indeed a great relief, especially in such a climate. In our garden, I also see neighborhood kids enjoying the new well, clean water immediately changes things. As for the kitchen, I haven't heard that OCMC is planning anything, but it might be worth asking Pastor Daniel next time you visit.

Yes, these sanitary facilities in Larteh really made a difference to the students' daily lives, especially in the heat. Several people in our choir also recalled how they once had to carry water from a distance. Have you ever been to Aki Breman, Adam?
