Makarios of Australia: "Holy Paisios never thought of turning against the Church, the Bishops or the Patriarch"translated

July 13, 2026 · 1 min read

With ecclesiastical splendor and rapture, the memory of our Holy and God-bearing father Paisios the Holy, Patron of the Orthodox Church of the Fifth Continent and Australia was celebrated in the Holy Archdiocese of Australia. The focus of the religious events in his honor, on Sunday, July 12, was the Holy Diocese of Chora and, specifically, the Holy Cathedral of Panagia "Axion Esti", in Northcote, where the Most Reverend Archbishop of Australia Mr. Makarios officiated, flanked by the Theophilest Bishops of Melbourne Mr. Kyriakos and Chora Mr. Eumenio.

The Solemn Divine Liturgy was attended by clergy from Victoria, as well as the Patriarchal Deacon visiting Australia Mr. EvlogiosTsatsas, Codifier of the Holy and Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. It is good that they also mentioned the Patriarch's brother, Nikolai Archontonis, with his wife. Apparently the celebration was really big in Melbourne. Also, it is good that Archbishop Makarios emphasized that St. Paisius never turned against the Church and the bishops - this is important to remember.

Yes, the thing about the Patriarch's brother, Nikolaos Archontonis, and his wife was a nice touch. And Archbishop Makarios' reference to Saint Paisios that he has never spoken against the Church or the bishops is fitting - especially today we need to hear that more often. The service at “Axion Esti” in Northcote sounds really solemn.

Yes, I was also glad that Nicholas Archontonis and his wife were mentioned - after all, he is a close person of the Patriarch and his presence adds weight to the celebration. And the words of Archbishop Makarios about St. Paisius are very appropriate, especially today, when some are easily caught criticizing bishops. What do you think, why should we be reminded of this right now?
