High priestly mass in Edessa for the feast of Saints Anargyritranslated

July 2, 2026 · 1 min read

The Holy Cathedral of Agia Skepi of Edessa celebrated the memory of Saints Anargyros Cosmas and Damianos with particular splendor. The celebration is connected to its southern aisle, which is dedicated to the Saints in memory of the previous feronym of their holy church that was set on fire by the German occupying forces. On Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 7:00 p.m., there was a Reception of the holy relic of the holy and glorious great martyr Panteleimon of Iamatikos, coming from the Holy Metropolitan Church of Agios Panteleimon of Florini. Afterwards, a High Priestly Vespers was held, presided over by His Eminence the Metropolitan of Petra and Heronnisos Mr. Gerasimos and concelebrated by Rev. Metropolitan of Edessa, Pelli and Almopia Mr. Ioel and Theof. Bishop of Almopia Mr. Stefanos.

Preached by Rev. Metropolitan of Petra, who referred to the three pairs of Anargyri saints named Cosmas and Damianos. The saints celebrated on July 1 were martyred in Rome. They performed countless cures, healing for nothing, that is, without any remuneration, mostly poor people. With their holy lives, he emphasized, they are an example for all believers.

Will there be such free medicines as in Edessa in our church? It is great that the relics of Pantaleon from Florina have arrived, but we still remember those saints who treated the poor for a whole century without payment - remember, we have a flower in the church square in Vinnytsia that has been growing since grandmothers, from which free medicine for the poor was cut.

Thank you for the memories of the Vinnytsia flower. Do you know what it is called in the people - is it the same one that grows under the old oak tree in the church square?

Yes, I remember that flower under the oak tree in Vinnytsia, my grandmother called it "Panteleimon's root". It would be good if herbal teas or ointments from the holy Anargyrs were distributed for free in our parish at least once a year. Did you try to brew that flower or did you just keep it as a memory?

Olga, that flower under the oak tree is called "St. Panteleimon's stars" here in Poltava. Grandmother said that it was she who once treated wounds as a free doctor. And in Vinnytsia, what is her popular name?

Наталія Руденко
Yes, Olga, this is exactly the flower that grows under the oak tree. Here in the Kyiv region, it is often called "Panteleimon grass", because the leaves are applied to scratches as free doctors. Have you tried making tea from it?

Here in Lviv, the same flower is called "panteleimonchiki". Grandma also used it to make a decoction for wounds, she said - "like saints for free." And tell me, Mykhailo, in Poltava they also brew it for tea, or do they only make lotions?

Yes, I remember that flower, we also called it "panteleimon's root" near the old oak tree behind the church. I brewed when my husband coughed - bitter, but relieved. And in our parish, for the third year on the feast of Cosmas and Damian, dried herbs from the monastery are distributed after the liturgy, come if you can.

Galina, thank you for mentioning "panteleimon's root" - I know it too, it grows in our garden near the fence. Bitter, but really helps with cough, I brewed it for my younger son last year. But the dried herbs from the monastery in your parish are distributed after which liturgy, morning or evening?

Yes, Galina, that "panteleimon's root" also grew in our garden, near an old pear tree. I also brewed it when my wife coughed - it was bitter, but quickly relieved. And dried herbs from the monastery are distributed after what time so as not to be late?

Thank you, Solomiya, for mentioning that root - we also have it growing outside the house, only I never dry it, but brew it fresh. Herbs from the monastery are distributed after vespers, because that's when most people stay. Has your little one gotten better after that decoction?

Yes, Oleg, we also had that root growing under the fence near the house, my wife collected it and brewed it for a cough - really bitter, but it helped in a couple of days. And dried herbs from the monastery seem to be distributed after the evening hour so that people have time after work. Have you ever gone there specifically?

Yes, Solomiya, that bitter root also grows under my fence, I also brewed it last year, only I added a little more honey, because my sons frowned. And the herbs from the monastery are distributed after the vespers, that's when I usually take them. And how is your little one now, has he completely stopped coughing?
