Prime Minister: The Greek Community in America is a bridge between Greece and the USAtranslated

July 2, 2026 · 1 min read

"At the headquarters of the Presidency of the Greek government, in the Maximos Palace, we celebrated the 250th anniversary of American Independence. A historic anniversary that reminds us of the timeless power of the ideas of liberal democracy", says Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in his post about the dinner he hosted for US Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle for the 250th anniversary of American independence. "However, it also refers to the common historical path of Greece and the United States. A path that goes beyond diplomatic ties and measures two and a half centuries of shared values and historical experiences, as I had emphasized in my speech at a joint session of Congress in May 2022," continued Mr. Mitsotakis.

And he pointed out: "The ideas that inspired the Founding Fathers of American Independence had their roots in ancient Greek thought; and the example of American democracy in turn inspired the pioneers of the Struggle for Greek Independence who saw in the American experience a living proof that freedom can be won when accompanied by faith, unity and determination."

I have seen the statue of Thomas Jefferson in front of Hagia Sophia, which is from the 1920s. I did not know that in Bulgaria they are also remembered for this historical connection - what would the old Bulgarian singers of the prayers for freedom say if they had read them?

Interesting mention of the statue in front of Hagia Sophia, Ivane. I didn't know it was from the 20s. The old Bulgarian revivalists would certainly be happy that the Americans also drew from ancient freedom, but whether they would approve of everything in today's America is another question.

You say it interestingly, Nikolay. I, on the other hand, thought of those revivalists of ours who read Jefferson and Adams during slavery. Whether they would approve of today's America, I don't know, but it seems to me that they would be most pleased with the very idea that freedom could still be won. And what do you think they would not like from today?

Interesting, Nikolay, I had not read about the statue in front of the cathedral. It seems to me that the revivalists would have picked up on that part about "tracks, unity and determination" - that's exactly what they were looking for, not an ideal state. What exactly about America today do you think would disgust them the most?
