Kekriras Nektarios in the newly erected Church of Agia Anna in Virotranslated

July 25, 2026 · 1 min read

On Saturday, July 25, 2026, the day on which our Holy Church celebrates the Dormition of Saint Anne, the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Most Reverend Metropolitan of Corfu, Paxos and Diapontian Islands, Mr. Nektarios, went to Viro, a developing suburb of the city of Corfu. There, with the care and labors of His Eminence, a surrounded Holy Church dedicated to Agia Anna is being built, which is going to cover the growing pastoral needs of the area. Thus, Mr. Nektarios officiated and spoke in the celebrating Holy Church, flanked by the Preacher of the Metropolis and Professor of the Holy Monastery of Agios Theodoros Tironos and Georgios Tropaioforos Stratias, His Eminence Archimandrite Christodoulos Triantafyllos, the head of the parish, His Eminence Archimandrite Andreas Gioka, Priests from nearby parishes and its Deacons.

His Holiness, during his speech, referred to the mystery of the incarnation of the Son and Word of God, underlining that Christ is "unbegotten" from the Father, as the timeless and uncreated Word of God, but also "begotten" from the mother, after taking on our own human nature from...

Glad to see how a new church is being built specifically in honor of St. Anna in an area where people are growing. It is good that Metropolitan Nektary personally served and spoke about how Christ is "without lineage" from the Father, but with lineage from the Mother. I hope that I will soon be able to go there for service, because we also love St. Anna in Kyiv.

I am glad that you liked how Bishop Nektarius explained about "agenalogitos" from the Father and genealogy from the mother. We also have a small chapel in honor of St. Anna in Podil, so it would be interesting to compare how they rule there. Do you often travel from Kyiv to Corfu?

I am glad that Bishop Nektarios personally served on the feast of St. Anna and spoke precisely about how Christ is "agenalogitos" from the Father, and from the mother he receives our lineage. In our church in Plovdiv of the Assumption, Saint Anna is also often mentioned, because without her there would be no Mother of God. I wonder if the new church in Viro will be ready for next year so that one can go and see.

I am glad that Saint Anna is often mentioned in Plovdiv as well - and I have heard that without her we really would not have reached the Mother of God. Regarding the new church in Viro, it is not yet known exactly when it will be ready, Bishop Nektarii said that the construction is going slowly because of the funds, but we hope it will be ready in two or three years. Have you already been to Kerkyra?

Yes, I also liked the thing about the “agenalogitos” from the father and the family tree from the mother. Last year we sang a song about St. Anne in our church choir, and now I'm happy that a whole new church will soon be built for her in Viro. Hopefully construction will continue soon despite the financial problems.

I am glad that you liked the bishop's explanation about the "agenalogitos" from the Father and the genealogy from the mother - I also paid attention to this, because my grandmother always said that through Anna and Joachim, everything human in the Mother of God came. Here in Podil, the chapel of St. Anna is modest, but warm, and on Corfu, I see, a large church is already growing. Were you there in person or did you just look at the photos?

I have not been to Kerkyra, Velichka, but I am interested in exactly how the construction is going there. And in Plovdiv, we honor St. Anna, especially in the church "St. Bogoroditsa" on the Trihulmieto, where every year we hold a small celebration for her Assumption. And how do you know the details of the funds - from the bishop himself?

Boris, I have not been to Kerkyra either, but from the photos I have seen, the wall has already been raised almost to the roof and they are working on the dome. In Plovdiv, the Church of the Trident is really very cozy for the feast of St. Anna - last year we went with the girls. And for the funds - not from the bishop personally, but from an acquaintance whose sister lives in Viro and helps with voluntary work there. When do you plan to jump to Corfu?

Mariana, thanks for sharing about the wall – it really looks like they are making quick progress with the dome. I, on the other hand, was in the Plovdiv church of Trihulmieto two years ago for the holiday, a very peaceful place after fishing on Maritsa. When are you going to go with the girls there again?
