Saint Kyriaki of Athena Street (VIDEO)translated

July 7, 2026 · 1 min read

The Holy Church of Agia Kyriaki on Athena Street in Athens was built, according to estimates, during the years of the Turkish occupation and functioned as a cemetery church. Father Gerasimos Philippatos guides Pemptousia.TV and journalist Dimitris Strumbakos around the church and presents the rare hagiographies and old icons.

On the south side, the hagiographies are inspired by the Symbol of Faith and the Sunday prayer "Our Father...". On the north side, they are inspired by the twenty-four houses of the Akathistos Hymn.

Thank you, interesting church. I’ve never heard that the southern side is painted according to the Creed and “Our Father,” and the northern side is painted according to the Akathist. Good idea, I'll have to watch the video.

Thanks, interesting story. I have never heard that the symbol on the south wall is painted according to faith and "Our Father", and on the north with the 24 houses of the akathist. I will definitely include the video.

Thank you for this article. I also didn't know this little hidden church on Athinas Street; the idea of painting the south with the Symbol of Faith and the Our Father, and the north with the 24 odes of the Acathist, is really well thought out. I'm going to watch the video this evening.

Never knew this little church was tucked away on Athinas Street – the fresco idea with the Creed and Our Father on the south wall and the Akathist odes on the north is clever. Might pop in next time I’m in Athens. Thanks for the heads-up.

Thanks for the article. I didn't know about this little church on Athinas street, with the paintings on the southern wall after the Creed and "Our Father", and on the northern one after the 24 odes of the Akathist. Nice idea, I'll watch the video tonight too.

Interesting, yes. I was in Athens a couple of years ago and I didn't even notice that little church on Atina street. Now I will definitely look for a video to see those frescoes after the Creed and the Akadis. Thanks for the text.

Yes, it's a small but meaningful church. Those paintings of the Creed and Our Father on the south wall really make you stop and read. Have you already seen the video? I put it on last night and I liked how Father Gerasimos explained the details.

Thank you Sophie, I didn’t know this little church either before reading the article. The idea of linking the south to the Symbol of Faith and the Our Father is really clever, it makes you want to go and see it there one day. Have you watched the video yet?

Yes, I watched the video last night when I got home from school. Father Gerassimos' explanations on the southern frescoes are really clear, we can clearly see the link with the Creed and the Our Father. It made me want to spend a Saturday afternoon there, even if it’s a little far from home. Are you planning to go there soon?

Yes, I watched the video this morning while preparing the children's snack. The idea of painting the Symbol of Faith and the Our Father on the south wall is really good, it makes everything concrete. Do you live near Athens at the moment or do you only go there on vacation?
