Emotion for the 104 victims of the tragedy in Mati – Trisagio, invitation to the dead and march on the road of firetranslated

July 24, 2026 · 1 min read

In an atmosphere of deep emotion, commemorative events were held to mark eight years since the deadly fire in Neo Voutza and Mati that claimed the lives of one hundred and four (104) people and left dozens with burns. The events were organized by the Municipality of Marathon and the Association of Relatives of Death and Burns, to be a strong reminder of the value of human life and the need for prevention, accountability and justice, so that a similar tragedy is never repeated.

It should be noted that in this deadly fire, the Metropolis of Kifissia suffered enormous damage with the complete destruction of the building facilities of the Lyreion Children's Foundation in Neo Vountza and the Women's Holy Monastery of Agia Triad.

The events started on the afternoon of Thursday, July 23, 2026, from the Holy Church of Agios Ioannou Prodromos in Neos Voutzas, where the Memorial of the Victims is located. I remember how we also prayed for those people here in 2018. 104 souls, that's terrible. Thank God that Metropolitan Kyrillos served the trinity and that they read all the names, so that they are not forgotten.

I remember these reports from 2018, when the fire was moving so fast that people did not have time to escape. It is good that they read all 104 names and that Metropolitan Kyrylos celebrated the trisagion at the monument. We also prayed in our parish in Gdańsk for the souls of those who died in Nowy Voutza and Mati.

I remember that in 2018, that fire engulfed both Lirej and the monastery of the Holy Trinity. It is good that Bishop Kyrillos served the trisagion at the monument and that they read all the names, so that not a single soul is forgotten. Thank God that they still remember and seek justice.

I also remember you in 2018, Bojan. Names are important, so they don't turn into just a number. In our parish, we baked and brought cakes for remembrance, because people stay a little longer after the Trisag.
