The Greek Parish of Zambia bids farewell to Vangelis Antonopoulostranslated

July 15, 2026 · 1 min read

With deep sadness, the Greek community of Zambia said goodbye to one of its own, a Greek artist. Vangelis Antonopoulos, a graduate of the historical "Karolos Koun" School of Drama, was a distinguished member of the Greek community of Lusaka. A man with morals, love for art and constant presence in the community of the parish. His soul went to Greece, where the funeral service was also performed.

In his memory, on Sunday July 12, at the Holy Church of Agios Alexandros of the Greek Community of Lusaka, a Trisay was celebrated.

The Trisagio was officiated by the Most Reverend Metropolitan of Zambia and Mozambique Mr. Ioannis, who spoke movingly about the life, contribution and work of the deceased.

Honoring his memory, the Consul General of the Republic of Cyprus in Lusaka, Mr. X. Spyron, and the President of the Greek Community of Lusaka, Mr. G. Liakopoulos, attended and addressed a greeting.

The presence and contribution of Vangelis Antonopoulos will remain alive in everyone's hearts.

Eternal memory to Vaggelis. It is good that in Lusaka the Trisagion was served in the Church of St. Alexander and that Metropolitan John himself spoke about his life and ministry. It’s a pity that his soul flew away already in Greece.

I agree, Maria, in the Church of St. Alexander the Trisagion was celebrated in a very homely way, as it should be for one’s loved one. It is a pity that Vaggelis did not have time to return to Lusaka, after all, he lived here for so many years and acted in community productions. Did you know him personally from the theater?

Yes, Elena, it was in the theater that we crossed paths with him - he always took on the most difficult roles and still managed to help with the scenery. It’s a pity that I didn’t get to say goodbye here in Lusaka. What production did you last see him in?

Eternal memory. Yes, it was in the Church of St. Alexander that everything went in its own way, without unnecessary pomp. And you, Maria, saw him in any community productions before leaving for Greece?

Yes, Elena, everything in the church was very homely, without unnecessary pomp. I last saw him in The Cherry Orchard about three years ago - he played the old footman there so convincingly that I still remember it. Did you often go to their performances in the community?

Yes, I remember that footman - it really was as if he had served on the estate all his life. I rarely go to performances, work doesn’t allow it, but that time my wife persuaded me. Do you often go to the community or more to the theater?

I remember how he played the footman in The Cherry Orchard - he was so precise, as if he had really been with the masters all his life. I try to be in the community every Sunday, but the theater is less often, work as a courier is exhausting. Have you been to Lusaka or do you only know it from stories?

I remember how he pulled out the footman in that “Cherry Orchard” - as if he really had been standing in the hallway all his life, not a single unnecessary gesture. In the community I try not to miss Sundays, but the theater is now only on video. Have you been to Lusaka or do you only know it from stories?
