Is it possible to shorten the antiphons at the Liturgy?translated

September 17, 2026 · 1 min read

Reader question:

Is it possible to shorten the antiphons at the Liturgy?

Vera

Priest's answer:

Archpriest Mikhail SAMOKHIN

Press Secretary of the Pyatigorsk and Circassian diocese;  Head of Information and Publishing Department; head of the missionary department of the Pyatigorsk and Circassian diocese.

Hello, Vera!

I don’t dare say what is possible and what is not, but I will describe existing practice. Established parish practice has long adapted the singing of antiphons to local singing opportunities and existing traditions. Thus, in practice, daily antiphons are almost always replaced by figurative antiphons.

A separate story is the singing of troparions at the third antiphon. In parish practice, “The Blessed” is almost always and everywhere performed without these troparions. Only in theological educational institutions and some monastic monasteries can one find the performance of the third antiphon with troparions.

Thus, in the practice of a large number of parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church, the question you ask has been clearly resolved. Antiphons are shortened, but not omitted.

God help you!
