Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessalonica
Remembrance Day:
November 8.
Demetrius of Thessalonica was born in the 3rd century into a family of secret Christians. After the death of his father, Emperor Maximian Galerius appointed the young man ruler of the Thessalonian region. Demetrius had to protect her from enemies and persecute Christians. But instead, he himself openly preached faith in Christ. Having learned about this, the emperor ordered Demetrius to be imprisoned. In 306 the saint suffered martyrdom.
Later, under Emperor Constantine, a church was erected on the site of his grave, and a hundred years later the incorrupt relics of the saint, famous for their miracles and healings, were found.
Stories have been preserved about the saint’s intercession for his hometown. Thus, during the siege of Thessaloniki by the Avars, the Great Martyr Demetrius appeared on the city wall, after which the enemy army fled.
