Orthodox calendar, August 5 Pre-celebration of the Transfiguration of the Lord Troparion – Voice 4

Let us meet the Transfiguration of Christ earlier, enlightened by celebrating the most before the celebration, believers and let us shout: the day of divine joy has arrived; The Master ascends to Mount Tabor, may the Beauty of His Godhead shine upon it.

Saint John Jacob from Neamţ He was born on July 23, 1913, in the village of Crăiniceni, Horodiştea commune, in the former Dorohoi county, in a family of faithful peasants, Maxim and Ecaterina, being the only child of his parents. At Baptism he received the name Elijah, and from infancy he proved to be a child chosen and blessed by God.

Six months after his birth, his mother, being a sickly nature, gave her soul into the hands of the Lord, leaving the child in the care of his grandmother, Maria. After two years, his father also dies, in the war, in the fall of 1916, leaving the child in the care of close relatives. He spends his first years of school in his native village, then attends the gymnasium in Lipcani-Hotin, and the high school in Cozmeni-Cernăuţi, being the best student in the school.

The part about little Ilie losing both parents so young really stuck with me. It's amazing how God took a kid raised by his grandma and turned him into Saint Ioan Iacob of Neamț. That tropar for the Forefeast is beautiful too — I keep humming the bit about the Master climbing Mount Tabor.
