First Sunday of Luke — Luke 5:1–11

October 4, 2026 · 1 min read

The fishermen are mending their nets. The night is over, their labor has borne no fruit, and all that remains is to tend to their equipment until the same work begins again. The Gospel reading for the First Sunday of Luke opens with this deeply human scene. And it is precisely here that Christ appears: at the moment when people are putting away what they have used, without having gained what they had hoped for.

The one with "put it in the background" stuck with me. Simon had been unjustly tired all night and yet he said "at your word I will let down the nets". It reminds a bit when I return from a route empty and have to go out again in the morning. No fanfare, just trust.
