I remember that in Yekaterinburg they also helped after the flood in 2016 - how they build houses here in Tennessee after Gurriken, so I immediately remembered our parish construction team. It’s amazing that the volunteers from St. Demetrius even collected money - it’s true that you need to live.

Both in Yekaterinburg after the flood, and in Kuban in 2015, our young people helped build houses after the storm. I saw how they were repairing Pashkin’s yard - just like in Tennessee.

Our parish in Boston sent a team down to help after Sandy back in 2012, so I get what IOCC is doing in Erwin. Nice to see the Saint Demetrios kids actually raised that $1,500 instead of just talking about it. The closer ties between the Eastern and Oriental Churches is the part that really caught my eye though — hope that “from dialogue to life” line actually sticks this time.

Our own Antiochian parishes here in Wichita have quietly shared clergy and youth events with the local Coptic community for years now, so I’ve seen a bit of that life already. Did the Boston team stay in touch with the folks in Erwin after the IOCC work wrapped up?

Yes, our parish people also went to Kuban in 2015; I myself patched roofs there with the guys for a couple of days after that storm. It’s like ours worked at Pashkin’s yard; I remember how the concrete was kneaded by hand. Have you been to Tennessee yourself or just from Pashka’s stories?

Yes, that “from dialogue to life” part feels real when you’ve already lived it. Our parish in Denver had a joint baking day with the local Coptic ladies last Lent — their kunafa recipe is now my daughter’s favorite. Did the Wichita youth events include any joint choir practices?

Our little group here in Chicago tried the same thing with the Armenians last year—ended up with more baklava than we knew what to do with. The Wichita kids did have a couple of joint choir practices, mostly simple troparia, and the sound was surprisingly good. Did your Denver crowd ever try mixing the recipes into one big tray?

Yes, I myself was in Tennessee in 2016, for two weeks I helped with painting and kitchen work for one family after a tornado. Kneading concrete by hand—I tried that too, and my hands hurt for a week afterwards. And what year did you work at Pashkin’s yard, in 1915?
