On Mountain Day in Romania, the Heroes' Cross on the Caraiman massif is celebrated, which marks the 98th anniversary of its consecration.

The monument was erected between 1926 and 1928 at the initiative of Queen Maria and King Ferdinand I of Romania. The project of the ensemble was carried out by the Romanian architects George Cristinel and Constantin Procopiu.

The cross has a total height of about 39.3 meters, of which 8.35 meters is the plinth, and an opening of the horizontal arm of about 15 meters.

The metal body was made of steel profiles, being inserted, initially, directly into the rock. In 1930, two years after the consecration, the metal structure was embedded in a reinforced concrete plinth covered with stone.

The approximately 40-meter high cross entered the Book of Records as the tallest cross in the world placed on a mountain peak, according to Guinness World Records.

Every year, on the Ascension of the Holy Cross, tribute events are organized for the nation's heroes at the monument on Caraiman.
