More than 1,200 Gomel residents took part in a religious procession in honor of Saints Peter and Fevroniatranslated

July 7, 2026 · 1 min read

On July 7, 2026, on the eve of the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity, a religious procession “For the Preservation of Family Values” was held in the Novobelitsky district of Gomel, timed to coincide with the day of remembrance of the holy faithful Prince Peter and Princess Fevronia of Murom.

The prayer procession was led by His Eminence Stefan, Archbishop of Gomel and Zhlobin. Together with the archpastor, numerous clergy of the Gomel diocese, parishioners of city churches, families with children, youth, representatives of labor collectives, public organizations, law enforcement agencies and departments took part in the religious procession. In total, more than 1,200 people took part.

The religious procession began at the Church of the Holy Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky on Ilyich Street. With icons, banners and prayer chants, the participants walked along Dubravnoy Proezd to the Church of the Holy Blessed Prince Peter and Princess Fevronia of Murom on Dubravnaya Street.

The holy saints Prince Peter and Princess Fevronia in the Orthodox tradition are revered as the patrons of Christian marriage, marital fidelity, love, mutual respect and a responsible attitude towards the family. Their memory reminds us that the family, in the church’s understanding, is built not only on feelings and everyday things...

Good thing they did, over 1200 people with icons and litanies from Alexander Nevsky to the church of Peter and Feronia. It is nice that families with children and young people participated, not only clergy. Their memory reminds us how important faith is in marriage, not just feelings.

It’s good that more than 1,200 people came out, especially families with children and young people. Here in Yaroslavl we also often go to Peter and Fevronia, but so many people rarely gather. I wonder how often such a move is carried out in Gomel?

And in our parish they talked about St. Peter and Fevronia at the Sunday service. It's good that so many families with children came, not just the priests - so you can see that it's not just a formal procession. Here in Bucharest, we have never seen so many people gathered for a single cross, but maybe we will try something similar next year.

Here in Iași, at the neighborhood church, we also talked last Sunday about Petru and Fevronia, especially how they respected each other in their marriage. It's good that so many families with children came to you, so you can see that it's a living thing. Do you think that more people would come to Bucharest if they started from a bigger church in the center?

Well said Niki, I liked that there were so many families with children and young people together with the priests. Here in Thessaloniki I would like to see something similar for Agios Dimitrios, not only for weddings. How do you usually celebrate this day with your family?

Thank you, Anastasia, it’s nice to hear about Yaroslavl. In Gomel, such a procession to Peter and Fevronia has been held for the fourth year in a row just before Family Day, and each time there are more and more people. Do you only go to Yaroslavl on their memorial day or do you hold other family events in the church?
