On October 10, the Romanian Orthodox Church marks 250 years since the official granting of the honorary title of "Lateholder of the Throne of Caesarea Cappadocia" to the Metropolitan of Ungrovlahia.
The title was granted on October 10, 1776 to Metropolitan Grigorie II, at the time when Alexandru Ipsilanti was the ruler of Wallachia.
The decision of the Patriarch and the Synod of Constantinople granted the Metropolis of Ungrovlahia "the dignity and title of deputy of the first see among our metropolitans (that is, of Caesarea), as a title and privilege."
The document stated that it was to be preserved by the hierarchs who would occupy the metropolitan seat "for ever and ever".
Professor Emilian Popescu stated in his research that this expression was also used before 1776, unofficially and provisionally, during the period of Metropolitan Neofit Cretan, in the period 1738-1740.
Procedures for granting the title Alexander Ipsilanti, who had close relations with Constantinople, played an important role in the efforts to grant this title.
